MTV stands for Music Television. MTV is a cable and satellite television channel. MTV launched on August 1, 1981. The purpose of MTV was to play music videos. The music videos were guided by VJ’s or video jockeys. MTV is nothing like it used to be when it was launched. MTV was twenty four hours of music videos.
If you were watching MTV when it was launched, then you probably remember the first image shown. It was a montage of the Apollo 11 moon launching, but with a MTV flag blowing in the breeze. The first music video that was shown on MTV was by The Buggles. The music video was, “Video Killed the Radio Star”.
The first original video jockeys were Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, J.J. Jackson, Martha Quinn, and Alan Hunter. The VJ’s would introduce the music videos, and they would also tell about music news, conduct interviews, and announce concert dates and album releases. The bands that were played on MTV included Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Culture Club, Blondie, The Cars, Def Leppard, The Police, Prince, and Adam Ant. Michael Jackson was one of the first black artists that appeared on MTV in 1981.
If you watched MTV in the early years, then you can recall the famous MTV song and saying, “I want my MTV”. In 1984, MTV produced its first MTV Video Music Awards show. Madonna performed her “Like a Virgin” song on the show. MTV Video Music Awards show is the most annual awards shown watched today.
From 1995 to 2000, MTV started playing few music videos. Reality programs started being aired on MTV. The Real World and Road Rules began airing. The Osbourne’s featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon, Jack and Kelly Osbourne was on the reality show. The show was based on the everyday life of the famous Osbourne’s. The show premiered in 2002, and became the biggest success and hit for MTV.
In 2003, Punk’d was added to MTV. Punk’d was a show created by Ashton Kutcher. The show was based around playing pranks on celebrities. Other celebrity reality shows on MTV included Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, The Ashlee Simpson Show, and Dogg after Dogg. Jersey Shore became a huge hit for MTV.
The original MTV logo was designed by Manhattan Design in 1981. The ‘M’ was sketched, then the TV was painted on. The ‘M’ was red, and the TV was yellow, but the logo changed throughout the years.
MTV may not play the videos like they used to, but they offer a wide variety of shows that someone in your family watches. If you are a die-hard MTV fan from the beginning, then having the MTV T-Shirt that has the famous catch phrase, “I want my MTV” with the iconic logo on the front is a must have. The MTV tee shirt that has the well sought out hamburger logo is another favorite for MTV fans. No matter what MTV t-shirt you want, you can wear it proudly while watching your favorite MTV show.
